what is the right grade for my daughter who will be 8 years this september. She is new to this country.

Mrudula
My daughter was staying in INDIA with my parents. She completed her 3rd grade in INDIA. This year she joined us and she would be staying with us. I secured the admission in the near by Elementary school and they gave her admission into 4th Grade as she completed 3rd in INDIA. But i am really worried if my and school's decision was right because, first of it would be a real challenge for her to adjust to the big culture change in the school. She may have problems with her accent and English. On top of it if she has to mingle with kids of older age, it may be difficult. Please suggest what should i do now. My husband is insisting that she should go to 4th, but i am worried about her. Please suggest. I am new to the US education system. So please give your valuable guidance as of what should i do.

It would seem that based on her age that your daughter would, all things being equal, enroll in 3rd grade. However, the trend in at least some towns is to actually hold kids back if they have summer or September birthdays. You might find that some of the kids in 4th grade are almost 2 years older than your daughter. Perhaps you can ask about the ages of the other students in the 4th grade.

Thanks for your input. I will go ahead with the 4th grade and see how it works.

Thank you for your valuable suggestion. To your questions, My daughter is pretty comfortable at home with us. It would only be the school which would be new to her. I did put her in a two week half day summer camp so that she would get to know about US.
