How do I get my child into another school zone.

susanrvickers
I recently moved to another school district with my 5 year old who is due to start kindergarten this fall. The one and only elementary school in my surrounding school zone, is just not up to par. How do I go about trying to get my daughter into
another school that meets my standards?

I have checked the available school in my district, and like I said, there is only one available that is scored very low, like a 1. Most of the parents I have talked to from this area, enroll their children in area private schools, or magnet and art and science public school that have deadlines for enrollment.
The district here does allow for intradistrict transfers, but I don't know how to start that process. I have only been in this area for about 2 months, and don't know alot of people. I will visit the only school in this district today, as this is the first week that anyone was available at the area schools. How do I find out if I can enroll my child in another school zone? Do I have to get in touch with the school boe, or can I call a school that I am interested in directly.
Thank you for your help.

Hi susanrvickers and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

I'm not sure when school starts in Chattanooga, TN, but time is of the essence right now. Many school choice programs have deadlines back in the winter or spring of the previous school year.

Your first stop should be to the school district website, and finding out which schools are in your school district. Then you need to figure out which schools are a good fit for your daughter. You can use GreatSchools ratings and reviews, plus campus visits, and talking to parents from that area. Then you need to talk to the district itself to see what the requirements are for intradistrict transfers. Some school districts allow families to attend any school with space. Others make it a bit more complicated. Now if you're looking at an interdistrict transfer--attending a school outside your home district--it might be a bit more paperwork, including getting permission from the district you'll be leaving.

See what you can find out, and if you have any additional questions, let us know and I'll be happy to help you try to find the information on the websites.

Good luck!
