Hi momof4princess, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

I know it's not helpful to hear the answer "it depends," but essentially that's the case.

Schools with PTAs typically base membership on joining, typically a $5 or $6 membership. However, it's also normal to allow any parents to attend meetings to voice their concerns. At my daughter's school they never checked for membership at the door.

PTOs don't necessarily have dues, and they don't necessarily require membership to consider families part of the community.

My daughter's school just moved to a PTO, and our bylaws state that just being an interested party (parent, grandparent, neighbor to the school, etc) is enough to warrant membership and attend meetings.

That said, if your daughters' school(s) are anything like most schools, the membership is hardly the last time the school will talk to you. There will be fundraisers that they'll hope you participate in, whether financially or by donating time.

For more information on how PTAs and PTOs work, I encourage you to visit ptotoday.com.

Good luck!
