Charter schools are public schools in the sense that they can't charge you tuition but they are freer to define themselves than are traditional public schools. In response to growing public dissatisfaction with public schools, most states passed laws allowing for the formation of 'charter schools'. Some charter schools specialize in certain subjects such as foreign language or technology, some have very defined and different approaches to education.
All of them or any of them are worth checking out if you have a school age child.
