Are there any Anti-bullying parent groups (like PTA/PYTO) out there?

Anonymous
With all the bullying posts i've been reading (and there are a LOT), it seems that "programs" school try don't work and are only a bandaide effect, not a long term approach. A freind of mine and i were discussing this, and she said "hey, why don't you form a parent committee like PTA". And i thought, yeah, maybe if a group of parents, in a positive, constructive approach get together to create and discuss effective skills to teach our children, then maybe we can create an atomoshpere that the kids feel they are in control of, rather than a "program" that simply tells them what to do? I'm talking about the elemtary school level (right now). I have another freind whose child was bullied, along with mine, who is supportive of this too. It seems these parents want 1)someone to stand up, start the ball rolling, and be a "voice" for the parents at the school, and 2)a unified approach to working with our kids on how to handle bullies. Any tips, ideas, things you would like to see?

I think that it's a great idea! My son who is in elementary wasw also bullied via a very nasty note from an older boy. I wont tell you was it said due to the fact it was too graphic. I was mortified! When the boys mother was talked to she was mortified too. I dont see the boy anymore in school and the after care in which it happend was great. If you start this group have the school involved as they are a great resource. We don't have a great problem where my son goes that goodness. They have what is called PBS which is a reward system for the kids who are caught doing good. Its a great way for the other kids eho arent so good to be good. You may want to ask the school where you are at if they have a such system. Good luck and please post how your group is going!!!

The reason I ended up here in this site is because I'm having problems with the adults at school doing the bullying! Figuring out if this is common. Yes, I'll have a confress but right now I need resources to calm me til then.

Look and see when your child's first PTA meeting is. It's usually in the beginning of September. At least ours is. You can ask about having a assembly at the school that at that time. Our school has what is called PBS. This is a positive reinforcement of good behavior. Kids will get recognition for their good behavior as well as being a good role model for other kids. Maybe the school can adopt this as a positive feedback for the kids. This may help with the bullying as those kids who are may stop when other kids are being rewarded for being good. Good luck,

I'm not quite sure if I understand your organizational goals, but I know there was a past discussion that featured a couple of moms who started a Special Education branch of their PTA (SEPTA) to address concerns of families who had children with learning difficulties. It seems to me that you might want to read that discussion, and perhaps you can tailor their experiences to address the needs of families to deal with bullying issues: schwablearningforumarchive.greatschools.net/thread/16379.html
