Has anyone used the Lindamood-Bell method?

Amooliakin
My 15 year old son has been through lots of special ed... and is now doing extremely well at a mainstream school. However he uses audio books for most of his learning and he really wants to read more quickly and easily. Has anyone experienced Lindamood-Bell programs for this age group? What did you think of it? Does it work across the board for typical dyslexic kids?

Lindamood Bell has a good reputation. It could be helpful. However, now that your son is 15 there's more at stake than a child in elementary school.

If I were you I would look for a school using Language! published by Sopris West. This intervention program is incredible. The program has been around for many years. It is designed to get kids up to grade level in a year or two, depending upon the severity of their problem(s).

Lindamood Bell has a number of programs that are designed to build skills in different areas of reading. When delivered by a well trained teacher, with sufficient intensity and with fidelity, the results can be very good. However, results will vary based on the student's learning profile. There is a continuum of dyslexia - slightly to severely dyslexic and the more severe, the more time it will take. Likewise, if there are other learning challenges such as attention issues, auditory or visual processing issues etc remediation may take a bit longer.

The fantastic results you hear about are usually a result of the very intensive programs of 4 or more hours of instruction per day. My son was tutored using the LiPS program for 8 hours each week over the summer when he was 7 and he made very little progress. This is not to say the program is not effective - only that a very dyslexic student will take longer to show results.

There's also a very knowledgeable poster on www.millermom.proboards107.com, whose teen son has shown very good progress with LMB...I know they have several different programs, like Visualizing/Verbalizing, Seeing Stars, etc. so yu would need to post there and ask her directly what aspects of his reading they were trying to focus on...
