Relocating from the east coast

missy67
My husband will be working at Ft. Sam. We have two elem school aged children. We are looking for a neighborhood with good schools, kids, shopping , and low crime to move to. Any suggestions? Also, is it true that no one in San Antonio leaves their house during the summer months?

Missy,
You are in luck moving from the East Coast as I'm sure you will find San Antonio very affordable! The Alamo Heights school district is near Fort Sam and has an excellent reputation. North East ISD (NEISD) also has a good reputation. As with any city there are good areas and bad areas. The north side of the city tends to be the preferred area, but you have to be smart and know crime can occur anywhere. Since Fort Sam is on the northside, that should work out well for your husband.

As for not leaving the house during the summer, it's best to get out and back early when possible. Our high temperatures have been 92 to 103 in the last week or so. That makes parks rather warm by the afternoon, but there is plenty to do indoors. Stores and restaurants tend to be very well air conditioned (sometimes to the point where you need a jacket in the middle of the summer). Barbeques become very popular in the summer since it saves your from heating up the house with the oven or stove. The trade off to a hot and sometimes humid summer is a winter where you will never need to shovel snow or scrape ice from your car windows.

After moving to San Antonio 7 years ago, we still love it and cannot imagine anywhere else we could like as much- at least no where that houses are so affordable. Good luck with the move!

Hi. Your post caught my eye, because one of my best friends is moving to San Antonio next week. She's a former teacher, and schools were very important to her, although her kids are high school aged. She's going to be on the NW side...
If you go to the upper right corner of this page, where it says "Search Community By Keyword" and enter Antonio, you'll find several prior discussions about the city which may be helpful, like this one: community.greatschools.net/q-and-a/location/Texas/San-Antonio/What-school-districts-have-the-best-reputation-in-or-around-San-Antonio?cpage=1#comment_446310

Hi missy67, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

I'm not from San Antonio, but I live in Southern California inland, so I'm suspecting that the problem is the heat and humidity.

When temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees with equal humidity, people learn to cope in those types of climates. Typically, they split the day doing strenuous or outdoor activities early in the morning and later in the evening. Also in extreme climates, people find places to take their children that will not cause heat stroke--like air conditioned play areas.

Regarding finding your perfect neighborhood in San Antonio, have you talked to a real estate agent yet? They're chock full of information regarding neighborhoods with the amenities that young families desire. If you want to narrow your search down to some neighborhoods first, you might want to try the Find A School section here on GreatSchools located here: www.greatschools.net/search/search.page?c=school&lc=e&q=San+Antonio&search_type=0&state=TX

Good luck with your move, and let us know how it goes!
