I'm guessing your son's grades are solid As - to be performing above age group, his grades would have to be solid As and teachers' comments would have to be very strong. Rarely do teachers say "performing above age group" but are more inclined to use phrases like 'leads the class'.
How old is your child/what grade? Are they attending a public or private school? Does your school offer a gifted program? For schools that offer gifted programs on their own, many times they'll give all students some kind of screeing tests, or look at the top performers on statewide achievement tests, to help identify the brightest students. You can pay to have private testing done, (educational psychologists often can do IQ & achievement testing) but some schools don't care, and only consider their own evaluation results. If I were you, I'd ask your child's teacher whether they feel your son/daughter is doing work near the top of the class, and if you feel they're capable of greater challenges, then ask what options exist. (ie, pull-out classes, self-contained gifted classes, skipping a grade, whatever...)
