Usually in elementary and middle school, if your child is failing math and/or language arts, the teachers will inform you that your child will need to attend summer school. You should also get a letter from the school telling you that your child will need summer school.
If your child is in high school and is failing in core subjects, then summer school will be required. In addition, high school kids can attend summer school to get some classes out of the way early, to allow them to participate in sports or music.
Hi. Your question is difficult to answer, without knowing more details. How old is your child/what grade? Have they been struggling in school this past year? Have they been formally tested for possible learning difficulties? Do they have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)?
Summer school and ESY (Extended School Year) aren't exactly the same thing. ESY is often offered to kids who have known learning disabilities and who would regress if they didn't have ongoing support over the summer. Summer school is usually optional, and some school districts offer classes that are a way for kids to make up courses they didn't pass in the prior year, as well as allowing kids who might want to "get ahead" to take a course over the summer, and allow more space in their schedule for electives the upcoming year.
If you could share more details about your child's situation, we can try to better answer your question.
