I really like Piedmont CDC. It is a state operated program that you have to qualify for based on income. It is far better than any highly priced program I visited. It is part of the Oakland Unified Schools and works to prepare children for grade school. Ms. Judy is amazing - about 20 years experience and sooooo skilled at meeting the academic, social, and play needs of each child. Love it.
I would have to say "New higland elementary school" in 85th st
its a GREAT school i went there from 2nd grade all the way to 5th and i loved it..u can make friends easily...
Far and away the best preschool is Aquatic Park School (APS) in Berkeley. The philosophy is Reggio Emilia with an emergent curriculum. What this means is that preschoolers are read to "on demand" what they learn is through play and their own emergent interests that are supported by the teachers.
Recently the two year old dolphin group wanted to learn about spiders - they had orb web weavers in the garden, drew spider webs on the concrete with chalk , labeled a giant size poster board of a spider and its body parts, created a mural on butcher paper, took field trip walks looking at and comparing spiders, counted to eight over and over, made spiders as cooking projects and spider webs as craft project, even parents got involved bringing pictures of spider webs they had taken.
Its like that every day. Lots of choice, you don't have to wear shoes or coats if you don't want to and you get to play in sand and mud if you want to. Its simply a brilliant environment.
I would not recommend Pumpkin Patch Learning Academy on e.22nd St. While the program appears really nice, the woman who runs the program is very pushy, unflexible, and if given any chance will take your money while you blink.
