Moving from Illinois to Lehigh Acres Florida.

Lehigh Acres is in Lee County and as of last year you did not have a choice where your child attends school. They bus kids 20 miles away from their homes when there is a neighborhood school right next door. I can't imagine why you have chosen Lehigh Acres but I do not know your circumstances or the age of your child. The later you enroll your child the less chance you will have to make a choice. I moved there last August and stayed 1 month and moved again because of the schools and crime in that area. You should check it out before you move. Good luck!
I'm actually in IL, not FL. Some school districts do have their "attendance boundaries" listed on the web, but I'd suggest calling to be sure. (You could use the "Find a School" Feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page, and enter the town/grade level....you'll see a list of all schools in the area, along with a map, and phoning the one closest to your new home might be the best place to start...)
Thank you very much.. And yes the move is a little of both a work move for my husband and relatives. But that is what I am going to do is just tell him it is going to be new for the both of us and we will be doing it together. I also have a 10mos old but for him it wont really matter either way.. Thank you for your help. I greatly apreciate it. Oh 1 more question, if I have the address of our new home do you know is there a way to find out the attendance boundaries? Or do I just contact a school that I am interested in and ask them?
Hi. A lot depends on how old your son is, as well as the circumstances surrounding your move. If you've never been to FL, I can't help but wonder why you've decided to go there now....if it's a work transfer, most companies will at least pay for you to visit before moving. If your situation is one where you're going to live with some relatives out of financial necessity, then you may not have a choice in terms of school he can attend right away.....Most public school districts have "attendance boundaries," and where you reside determines which school your son will attend. There is a school voucher system in FL, but I'm not sure how long you have to be a resident to apply for it, or what the specifics are.
In general, I'd recommend "honesty" as the best policy. You can tell your son that you're not sure what to expect, either, except the weather will be warmer, and there will be more palm trees than evergreens, but he will have a chance to meet new friends.
