I can't speak for guidelines in Baton Rouge, LA but where I live, there is a stipulation that students can't have more than a certain number of absences each term... You might want to check your state "Board of Education" website to see if you can find out, and/or just call your child's district and ask. I agree with TeacherParent that this late in the year, usually they'd have indicated if they were planning to retain a student...
Repeating a grade should be based on his skill level - and his grades are usually an indication of that. How have his grades been?
