Hi, My sister in law lives in San Antonio off of 1604 and Blanco. My nephew goes to NEISD. My sister in law is very firm on academics. She boasts about his teachers. They are in a gated community. And is close to shopping, Fiesta Texas, and Sea World. She also has my nephew in a football leage. When we go to visit it never takes us long to get anywhere. If you would like more info feel free to email me. Hope this helps.

Ok, near Commerce street...East side of San Antonio has a high crime rate so I'd steer clear of that. HOWEVER, Alamo Heights ISD IS close to downtown and one of the wealthier neighborhoods in the city. Your husband would be about 5-10 minutes from work (unless he encounters our wonderful traffic!). Their crime rate is extremely low (hence the comment about "wealthier") and their schools feature small class sizes and solid programs. Alamo Heights is like its own little town with shopping, restaurants and arts incorporated. I suggest you find a really good realtor who KNOWS Alamo Heights because it has many surrounding neighborhoods that do not share its low crime rate. Unfortunately that is generally the rule with many SA neighborhoods.

HISTORICALLY, northside San Antonio has had the better schools because it has had the wealthiest demographics.

If you decide to go further north on 281, I would suggest schools in NEISD and homes between the Bitter/281/Thousand Oaks area. North on IH-10, try homes north of the IH-10/410 interchange in eiter the NEISD or NISD school districts. Both of these areas offer plenty of shopping and restaurants, but will be quite a commute for your husband.

As far as weather goes, we are the central hurricane shelter and evacuation center for Texas. Most hurricane refugees come here for shelter from the storm. We may receive occasional high winds and rain from hurricanes, but that is usually it. The biggest weather-related issues we usually have are flooding and drought. The rain can come quickly to dry, arid ground causing "flash flooding" (almost all roads that are prone to flooding have flood gauges to notify you of water level and are closed during possible flooding). We are currently in Stage 2 water restrictions requiring residents to water only once per week on designated days with hand-held hoses allowed at any time.

I hope this gives you a better picture.

My husband will be working near the east-central part of San Antonio, off of Commerce. We are looking for a nice suburb with other children nearby, a safe place to raise a child, and the best public school's we can find. I would prefer small class sizes, caring teachers, and parent involvement. Academic > Sports. An area close to entertainment, restaurants, and grocery. Also, I am curious about San Antonio weather/hurricane activity. Is it severe, does it require evacuations ever?

San Antonio is very large. If you could provide more information as to what side of town would be closest to your work, it would narrow it down. There are many great districts and many good schools...as well as many, many suburbs. What are you looking for in a school/suburb?

Hi. Have you tried using the "Find a School" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page? You can enter a location and grade level and see a list of all schools in a given area. Public ones are rated from 1 (low) to 10 (highest) based on how their students perform on statewide testing. You can click on individual school names in blue font and find out more details about each one.
