Can you send your child to any merrillville schools, as long as you live in merrillville? Very important, help

Anonymous
the situation is, i live in the Fieler district, and with her special needs and physical needs i have researched and feel "john Wood" would be best for my child. Whevever i have tried to ask local principals they say , "the child MUST attend the schhol in there district! Personally i feel, if you have special circumstances and i am willing to provide transportation, and the school accepts her, what is the big deal.. I have researced and researced and there in nothing LEGALLY that states , they HAVE to attend in there district, BUT i dont know how to get them to listen to me! When you have a child with A physical impairment, i need to know she is going somewhere that best fits her needs. If there is any parents out there that has a child attending a school in merrillville considered out of there district, can you please help me figure out how to do this! Thank you to anyone with helpful information!!

Hi,
I had a similar situation. I petitioned Dr. Anthony Lux who is the Super of Merrillville Community School Corp. After explaining my dilema and assuring that I would be responsible for providing transportation my childs was accepted at John Wood which is reported to be one of the better Merrillville Schools. I hope this info helped. Good Luck to you and your child.

Under IDEA the school does not have to provide the "best" education only an appropriate education.

Since some school administration can be “tricky”; you should not ask for the "best". You should instead request the program you mentioned, and state that you feel it is the “appropriate program” for your child.

Does your child have an IEP?

If she has an IEP; you should request an IEP meeting to discuss your concerns. You can call an IEP meeting any time, and as often needed.

Have you contacted the school principal via e-mail?

You might also e-mail the district superintendent if you continue to have problems with your request.

You must make all requests in writing. This is your documentation if you need to file a complaint with the state later.

I also suggest all future requests be made formally, and sent via e-mail.

In the past I needed to transfer my children to another school in Merrilliville. I put in a special transfer and it was approved. As stated you will have to provide your own transportation to and from school. Also, you will have to submit a transfer every year. I hope I was not too late, sorry for that. It was not hard you will just have to explain your situation.
