Hi. Like michellea and dhfl143, I'm also the parent of a child with special education issues, and I want to say "welcome." In addition to Greatschools Learning and Attention Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554, another good forum is www.millermom.proboards107.com The latter has quite a few parents from NY.
Michelle has provide you with some excellent resources. Take some time to review them and then please do join us at the "Learning and Attention Difficulties" group here at Great Schools:
I have a child that has been on an IEP for 7 years. I also advocate for families of children with IEP's. There are many great articles on this site that can help you understand your rights, your child's disability and how to prepare for team IEP meetings. Here's a link to a list of articles www.greatschools.net/search/search.page?search_type=0&q=IEP&hiddenState=WA&c=topic
I would recommend educating yourself as much as possible about your child's disability, the types of programs that can help.
It is also helpful to fully understand the demands and expectations of "typical" students. This gives you insight into the types of skills your child needs and how far behind (or not) he or she might be, Most states list grade level expectations on their DOE website. These are often called curriculum frameworks.
