Will they hold back my son from going into 4th grade because he turns 9 in October?

Hi
My son was going to school outside of the States and was admitted before he turned 5 in first grade. I'm relocating to Mansfield, TX and I'm wondering if they'll hold him back even though he is doing well in school.

Wow, a December cutoff, I didn't even think they existed anymore. The cutoff in Missouri is Aug 1 and in KS Sept 1. Most kids start 4th grade at 9 and turn 10 while they are there around here.

9 is the average age for a 4th grader in the US, I started 4th grade at 8 due to my birthday being the end of September.
5 (or 4 1/2 befor Dec 2) Kindergarten
5 1/2 - 6 1rst
6 1/2 - 7 2nd
7 1/2 - 8 3rd
8 1/2 - 9 4th ....and so on.

You will need to check the website of the local school district - or call the school if you know which one you will attend - but the general rule is that a child will be advanced grade by grade as long as they are passing proficiently, so if he was proficient in the 3rd grade where he went before - he should be in the 4th. Since the school was outside of the states, the rules may change -except most other countries have higher proficiency levels than we do. They may want to test his level of proficiency just to make sure, but it should not be a problem if he is an advanced learner (which I am assuming since he started 1st grade when he was 4.) - That is unless 1st grade there was the equivalent to our kindergarten.
