Hi Anon, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

Have you talked to his high school guidance counselor yet? Can he take summer school at the high school to fix the grade? Can he take the course at a local community college and have that stand in?

Your guidance counselor would be the first person to talk to, and then your son will have to let the college know what he's done, and how he plans on fixing it (repeating the course at either summer school or community college).

The D alone will not lose his admittance to the four-year school, but if he doesn't make amends before he starts the college in the fall, they can choose to refuse him. Most colleges admit students contingent on passing their senior courseload.

Please let us know how things turn out.
It would depend on the college and the terms under which he was accepted. If he's a scholarship student or been granted financial aid - then they wanted him badly enough to give him a scholarship or aid- and likely still would look forward to him coming in September if he promises to make up this class this summer.

And if he's not a scholarship student but was to be a 'full pay' student- they're going to still want him and likely very badly given the troubling economy. If you trust your high school college counselor to handle this - that would be one approach but certainly consult with the guidance counselor before someone calling the admissions officer with whom your son interviewed - if he interviewed - or call the college counselor's best contact in the college's admissions office.
Good luck.

Anonymous, as the other posters have said, unless your son was applying to an extraordinarily competitive university, most colleges won't refuse to enroll a student who has already been admitted, just because of a single "D." While it may not be an ideal grade, it is not a failing grade, and so it may not even need to be repeated. (Another mom I know, whose honor roll son "slacked off" a bit at the end of his final year, said colleges have seen other students with "Senioritis," so yours won't be the first, nor the last.)
