Austim schools in Newport News VA

Anonymous
We will be moving soon to Newport News, VA. My son will be turning 3 then. What school(s) are the best for Autism? He is verbal so I do not want picture exchange. Does anyone have any experience w/ the Autism School in Kiln Creek? Is it run by the school district or is it private? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

My child has Asperger's and she is in an autism classroom at another elementary school. Everyone in her class is verbal and she can fool you to where you wonder if she has anything wrong at all, then something upsets her and its on! To answer your question the Autism school is located inside of Kiln Creek Elementary School and you can search that school and go onto their site and e mail them for more information. It is a public school program and it is actually for the more severe cases of Autism. If your child is not severe they may put him into either the PEEP program or the head start program we have here. You should contact our school system by going onto the website for NN Public Schools and e mail them or call them with any questions like that. My child went through the PEEP program and into a regular school with a special class. Your son only being age 3 will be the factor here, so more than likely PEEP will be where they would direct you. There are several programs in the area public schools that house PEEP, so you really need to get in touch with the school system to see. I advise you to do this as soon as you can because spaces fill fast and your son would need to be evaluated by the school psychiatrist , social worker, and others. Good Luck.

Hi. I've got a son with special needs, but not autism. I recommend that you network with other local parents in your area, through support groups like www.thearc.org or www.autismspeaks.org, and see if they can give you first-hand recommendations. For general questions, you might also like to join Greatschool's Autism/Asperger's Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/18940
