The teachers are considered good, but comparing my opinion with a bunch of other kids' opinions shows the students think not. Half the teachers are fun and exciting, but half of them are boring and completely unorganized. For example: one of my teachers just wrote "Do worksheet" on the board, and when I did it and brought it back, it turned out we had two worksheets due! A ton of the class got that homework late bacause of that. We are also reading slaughterhouse 5 in 7th grade, which has an ABSURD amount of swearing. But some teachers will make funny comments like "Our new subject is Ancient Greece, not to be confused with what's in the fryers at McDonalds." So I'd say the teachers are okay, but not as good as they are said to be.
well I'm a seventh grader and between sports and homework and studying I'm overwhelmed. I was used to getting straight A's as I was in the top 5 smartest gifted program at my old school, but I can barely keep a B average at Basis, I am staying for highschool, I really don't think I can say I like Basis, but it will be a great opportunity for your child to enroll in Basis, as long as you pay attention well in 5th grade, you'll do fine in the rest of the year. 5th grade does not require all that much studying for tests and quizzes, but 6-8 grade requires 20-40 minutes of studying for each quiz, 9-12 grade requires about 1-1 and a half hours of studying for each quiz per day. If you think your child is ready for the challenge of Basis, put them on the waiting list immediately, for it is a long line
The school can be overwhelming to any student. The teachers assign homework, tests and quizzes without regard for other subjects that my have work or tests on the same day. The fact that 5th graders have 2 science courses and a math, english, language and rhetoric course is challanging. The most important thing for your child to develop is organization;. Save all tests, and study guides handed out by the teachers. They will need them for comps!
Good Luck.
We're starting 5th grade this fall and as a parent, I'm truly terrified. But the school gives an entrance exam so you can gauge where your child is relative to the overall incoming class. There are lots of Kumon kids who are advanced in math. But my son is SO BORED in his PVUSD school, and he wants to go to BASIS. He's an average boy -- loves playtime more than homework. But I did a lot of research and from what I've heard, the teachers are amazing and so the curriculum, although demanding, is exciting and rewarding. What a great change from the Arizona public school system. My son is a little behind because of the Kumon babies, but I'm sure he'll catch up. BASIS is too good an opportunity to pass up, although, again, I'm really worried about what the homework will be like (but I would rather see real homework than the busywork we get now, and real learning even if his grades are less than all A's). Check into it.
Love Basis Scottsdale, my daughter is finishing her 2nd year there and we plan on staying thru high school. It is difficult, students must be organized and devoted to doing well, not an over abundant amount of homework, but study skills/habits are a must.
The education they can obtain at this school is superior, staff is awesome and willing to offer support, and the kids are just like any other school.
It is really worth looking into this charter school.
