we're returning to US after 4yrs in another country, how do i find out what grades my kids will enter

Anonymous
Although they were born in the United States, we left before the oldest began school. I know they wont just go into a grade based on their age but how do i find out what level they will be assessed at so they wont slide backwards. The grading system in this country is different than in the States and I am not sure how their records will be translated. The oldest is 9 and is currently in 5th grade here. We will be returning in July after school here finishes.

Hi. I'm not from NJ, but in general, children in the U.S. start Kindergarten at age 5 or 6, so a child who is 9 would typically be in 4th grade. My "gut" feeling is that your child might be better off repeating 5th grade again in the U.S., because it's bound to be an adjustment in so many respects. I don't know if your children speak and read and write English well, but if they don't, then that's an additional concern. You might do a "google search" for "NJ Board of Education Curriculum Guidelines" (or words to that effect) and then see what the state expectations are for children to be able to accomplish at different grade levels.

You probaby should have your kids do a placement test and this will let you know what grade to put them in for the upcoming school year.
