peachweenie is right, it depends on the school. My son goes to a charter as well which is also a magnet and they do a ton of homework in kindergarten. Real homework. So much that everyone complains about it but it sets the kids up for success later. To each his own.

It depends on the school. That should be one of the questions you ask when you tour a school. My son goes to a charter school that has no homework in kindergarten - which was one of the reasons why we chose the school.
Most kindergarteners just get "fun" assignments, like go around the house and find things that start with the letter "B," or do dot-to-dot drawings that help develop number-sequence logic, and fine motor skills by coloring, etc. "Reading" with a parent, or being read to by a parent, is always encouraged. I certainly wouldn't worry about it. Whatever your 3-yr-old is like now will change dramatically over the next two years.
