yes, use the ratings and parent ratings to learn about the schools in your area. Parent ratings are very valuable. Also, take a tour of the school and meet with the principle.
Hi~ have you tried using the "Find a School" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page? You can enter your location and grade level, and see a list of all the schools in the area. Public ones are rated from 1 (low) to 10 (high) based on how their students perform on statewide testing.
