My daughter is 4 1/2 yrs and has not had any schooling out of the home.

She will be 5 in Aug. My husband and I are debating wether to put her through preschool or strait to kindergarten. She will always be the youngest or oldest in her class. Any advice?

Hello BiornMom :0)
I would approach the question differently. Beyond your child's age, it would likely be more important to figure out her temperament or personality. Children who are slow-to-warm will have different ways of coping than children who are more extroverted by nature. The transition from the warmth of home to any school is a big challenge, no matter what. I think you should check out Merryhill at Sierra Gardens, if only for the 1st year. Try to ignore the actual building (not as new as most schools around here) and you will find staff who will be your partners in getting this transition done well for your child. (both my children go there, age 6 and 8). I have referred other parents from out of state, similar situations, with consistent success.
You have a wonderful family portrait, thanks for sharing. Regards, Atchai88

I concur with Magnetmom, although in general, I think young girls have fewer problems entering school than young boys, because of the higher physical activity level that many boys tend to display, and difficulty that young boys tend to have with less developed fine motor skills. Another consideration is whether your daughter would be in an all-day versus half-day kindergarten program....

Hi BiornMom and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

You're right, your daughter will always be the oldest or the youngest, but there will always be someone with that "honor." My son is a November baby and he was always the youngest, and even went off to college at 17. And his sister is a March baby and she's going to be one of the oldest. Each has its benefits.

Kindergarten readiness isn't necessarily something that has to come from a classroom. You can read more about whether your child is ready for kindergarten by visiting www.greatschools.net/articles/33/Kindergarten

Good luck, and let us know what you decide.
