My daughter went from 2nd grade to 4th, skipping 3rd grade. Her teachers noticed she was gifted early on and placed her in a class with 2nd and 3rd grade kids. She quickly moved on to doing the 3rd grade material, and by the end of the year her teacher was quite comfortable putting her straight into the 4th grade class. We were a little worried about the social aspects, but it hasn't been a problem. The only problem we have had is the amount of responsibility with homework jumped way up and the projects are much more detailed. But after a month she seemed to get the hang of it. My advice, go slow and make sure you look at your childs maturity level as well as their intelligence.

There is some excellent information on this available at www.hoagiesgifted.org. The site also has a link to a publication titled, "A Nation Deceived" that I have found very helpful. There are many other links on the subject, but I haven't looked through too many of them.

If you are considering moving a child up a grade you might also look into the Iowa Acceleration Scale, which is a test to help you determine the likelihood of your child's success. It is not an academic test to see if they are ready for the next grade. It has questions relating to your child's position in the family (oldest, youngest, only child), attendance, and motivation. Good luck in making your decision!
