Is Dundee doing away with half day kindergarten this year?

jodigirl76
I recently heard that Dundee is doing away with half day kindergarten and I must say, I'm not happy about it. When we attended orientation, half day was still offered and that is what I signed my daughter up for. Now I hear they are doing all day kindergarten only? In my persoal opinion, I think a 7 hour school day is way too much for a 5 year old! I am very upset by this. Kindergarten has been hald a day for as long as I can remember and everything has worked out just fine with it that way!

Hi jodigirl76,

I understand where you're coming from. My kids are 10 years apart, and when my son was in school, kindergarten was half-day and an optional enrichment program was available at a cost for the second part of the day.

My daughter started kindergarten two years ago, and everything had changed. Our district went to full-day kindergarten, although some crowded schools still had half-day available. What I found out is that the curriculum had changed. In half day, students received the same amount of math and reading as the full-day kids, but little else.

Curriculum standards for kindergarten are much different than a few years ago. Many students have the benefit of daycare and preschool, and are ready for longer days sooner.

When I had to make my decision, it was hard, but I went with the full-day kindergarten. I wanted her to have art, music, science, and all the things that make kindergarten special. And a full-day program is the only way to get it with the more challenging standards for kindergarten now.

If you really want a half-day option, check out local private schools. Some in your area might still offer it.

Good luck!!

I am pretty sure they are going to full day to save $$ on the schools budget. They have to do away with $800,000. I heard that the MS lead teacher is getting laid off along with some janitors and others. NOt sure about the lead teacher for the elementary school. Too bad our children are affected beacuse of money! Its a shame....
