Well you have to talk to his teacher and principle. Explain to them how you feel, see if they feel the same way. I don't think you should hold him back just because you think he is not socially ready....

If you're seriously considering retaining your son a year, I'd suggest meeting with his teachers, school counselor and principal if you haven't already. Repeating a year at this age is going to be tough for him. I had to repeat 7th grade because I had missed so much due to a family situation that year. It was hard on me.
