I am sorry to say but they need survelliance in and out due to gang violence is on the rise. We need our children safe. Have you seen youtube lately on how the children are beating up one another we need that watch because to much is going on. The camera should be posted somewhere near the sinks and when they first enter the bathroom no where near the toilet area. Safety is important
That is what I thought also. The school district and their lawyer say it is totally legal and they do not want to take it out of the school policy. They are only willing to add that they will notify law enforcement when they tape. The Minnesota school board policy has allowed this policy #712 to be put in place back in 1996. Our district adopted it in 1998. We had no knowledge of the policy until a student found a tape and brought it home to his mother.
that would be just like going into a fitting room or a public bathroom and finding a video recorder taping you that is totatlly not legal .PLUS the taping of minors could be borderline pornographic.
I copied and pasted this from the policy -
School district buildings and grounds may be equipped with video cameras. Signs will be placed at entrances to buildings where video cameras are installed notifying all persons that their conversation or actions may be recorded.
2. Video surveillance may occur in any school district building or any owned or leased school district property.
3. Video surveillance will normally not be used in bathrooms or locker rooms, although these areas may be placed under surveillance by individuals of the same sex as the occupants of the bathrooms or locker rooms. Video surveillance in bathrooms or locker rooms will only be utilized in extreme situations, with extraordinary controls, and only as expressly approved by the superintendent.
It sounds like to me, this is too vague and really needs to be re-worded. It doesn't state whether camera are zooming in on showers or the actual location. Also does the sign at the entrance of the school express cameras are in the washroom?
In my situation I wouldn't let my child shower at school. I'm in Canada and nobody showers after gym. You go sweaty to the next class. In fact on our sports team, cell phones are even banned from the dressing rooms as pictures can be taken with them.
So to answer your question- No video, cameras and cell phones have no place in the washroom or locker room.
Northerngal1- I wouldn't want my daughter being taped in the bathroom or locker room either. That's a complete invasion of privacy. It seems like it would be easy to find a loophole considering that the kids are minors. Was there an incident that brought about this policy? Is is that unsafe in the locker rooms and bathrooms?
