Moving to Richmond Virginia from NJ

teachy1... is right on. I too have had children in the city of Richmond and he has described their school system to a T. If your child is gifted it is spectacular. If you have an average or LD child you are at a HUGE disadvantage. Metro Richmond offers some great private schools though, which he did not mention. If you would like more information on private schools let me know what grades and learning levels and I will try to steer you in the right direction.
I would suggest moving to the suburban areas of Henrico County or Chesterfield County if your children are average to above-average learners. Both counties are increasingly diverse with 20 or more percent African American students and a growing Hispanic and Asian population. You can use a websearch and find test scores and lots of info on-line. Hanover County has good schools but is not very diverse at all. Richmond City Schools are primarily black, and okay at the elementary level. Richmond City high schools Open High, Community High, and The Governor's School are very diverse and cater to a gifted child. The other Richmond High Schools I would not recommend. The Governor's School is highly competitive to get admission to. As a former middle school teacher who has taught in Chesterfield and am now teaching in Richmond City, I don't recommend any of the middle schools I've seen in the area, had children attend, or have heard of. Middle school is a tough age when students are very much impacted by their peers and withdrawing from parents. I recommend private middle school just about everywhere around the Richmond area. After that, both counties offer high school Honors, (International Baccalaureate)I.B. and AP programs that are excellent for good, solid high school students who are motivated to excel. Henrico and Chesterfield Schools are generally well-managed for all children. Some children with handicaps may find some services superior in the City, however. Do your research if necessary on special services that are provided. Some special services are not provided at all schools in the counties and can entail long bus rides for kids.
