I realize this is a bit late and you may have already made a decision but if you are looking for a safe, middle class, family oriented area you should look at Sherwood. It can be a bit of a commute into Portland but if you don't mind the drive it is a great town for families.
Unfortunately, Portland Schools are very different in their quality of teachers and class environment, and honestly the neighborhood school will make a bigger difference than the neighborhood. There are many great neighborhood, but a very few great school. Look those up first, then find a nerby home to the school that really shines.
Depends what side of Portland you will be working in. Tualatin and Wilsonville are very nice and have a wide range of house prices. Wilsonville is nice as it is in the wilsonville/westlinn school district which is one of the top in the state.
Hi. I'm not from Portland, but I was wondering if you've tried using the "Find a School" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page. You can enter a city and grade level you're looking for, and see how they rate on statewide testing (1 is low, 10 is highest.) When you find some schools you like, you might try to contact a local realtor and inquire about housing prices, etc. within the attendance boundaries of those schools. Unfortunately, what's "middle class" in one state is often much different in another, and only you know what you can afford.
