National Turnoff Week

MagnetMom
Has anyone ever participated in this event where you turn off all media for a week?

I love the idea of monitoring how much TV my family watches, but as a TV-film major from college, I always find it interesting these events coincide with the beginning of season openings and season finales, so they hardly appeal to people who actually enjoy these shows (this year it's April 20-26 and September 20-26). And turn off my computer for a week? Not a chance.

Since I would never miss a season opener or the final few episodes of a show I really enjoy, I'd be a hypocrite to make my kids miss their shows to teach a lesson.

I'm more a fan of moderation--in all counts.

Here's a great article with tips to manage media here on GreatSchools: www.greatschools.net/cgi-bin/showarticle/650?cpn=homeflash_media

1seremen,

I agree with you. I really feel like if you make something "bad" or forbidden it ends up being more valuable.

I'm even like this about my daughter's reading. Her teacher wants her to log everything she reads, but she's only required to log in two entries a week. My daughter is never far from a book, but I only have her make her two entries. I definitely don't want her to feel like reading is work.

No! I got a note from my daughter's school for the subject, but decided to stick to our family routine. Most evening news hour is our family time and weekend TV is for the children.

We are very busy family and Media addiction is not an issue for us.
