Anyone with experience dealing with a teacher with ADD that does't believe your child needs extra help?

ADDMAMA
My gifted,ADD 6th grader is in the enrichment program in middle school. She has the same teacher for 3 classes who also has ADD. She is medicated. He is not.She has difficulty turning in homework which has caused her grades to suffer. We have met with him several times and at the advice of her therapist, requested a list of assignments and due dates. He would not provide it telling us "she'll get it and she needs to be accountable".Several meetings and emails later it hasn't gotten better. He will single her out and reprimand my 6th grader if I e-mail him regarding something she has told me about an assignment. He has told her he doesn't appreciate hearing from me. He doesn't keep the online access up to date and has said himself it isn't reliable. Now she is failing again with 6 weeks to go before the end of the year and I am meeting with the vice principal and teachers. Any one with words of wisdom on how the deal with him before the meeting.I feel like my hands are tied.

Sometimes the very people who you would think would be understanding, are the hardest. My dd had a teacher last year who seemed to think he would be great for her because he had struggled with LDs in school also. But it seemed as if his very LDs made his thinking rigid. Because he had eventually succeeded in school through working harder, he was sure that was what my dd needed to do. Nothing seemed to shake him. And dd worked her fanny off only to fall flat on her face, over and over again.

We held several meetings with the principal, and our outside consultants, including therapists, and notes from psychiatrists. It seemed that the only result of those meetings was that this teacher was not retained the next year. He made himself look very bad. He was working hard and trying very hard, but it was per his theory, and not per everyone else's assessments of dd's difficulties.

I'm sorry to say that the only way we got relief was for the school year to end and a new year, with a new situation, begin.

In response to ridley. A 504B Plan is put into place based on your child, teachers, doctors, and administrators input how to go about ensuring your child education needs are met according to State. Also, some states like Georgia and Florid have free scholarships issued for special needs children. My daughter has Lupus, along chemo to radiate Lesions from growing in her brain. She is in the honors program, along with Special need program as well. We were given a $8,900 scholarship to put her in a special needs or private. We/teachers recommended not to, because her school is one of the best in the country (Chamblee Charter, GA). The staff is excellent. But we will have to move soon - military. With the 504B, comes an IEP individual education profile. You, your child's teacher along with recommendations from your doctor create a educational plan. Ex. my child. She has a free period where she is permitted to make-up any missed work (absence/hospital). This period allows her to take her time completed assignments, because Lupus causes the joints to flare-up, and become stiff of paralyzed. This period also gives the opportunity to have a the teacher explain an assignment shee missed or don't understand. Also during all testing, if she can't-her assigned teacher can read the questions for her and put her chosen on the answer sheet. This has helped greatly after my daughter's chemo. Under the program, if she misses 3 days in a row, a teacher comes to the house to help her get caught up. I love Chamblee. If anyone is moving to Georgia Chamblee Charter High, and awesome school. We came to Georgia in 1999, and have been with Chamblee cluster since. Hopes this will help. It does get better, I tell and the staff my daughter's education is my investment and I am aggressive in protecting that investment. :-)

Your child needs to be covered by an IEP or 504 plan to receive the services she requires. Contact the Child Study Team - sometimes referred to as the Special Education Department and request an evaluation immediately. If you have current documentation of your daughter's condition - that is enough to get the ball rolling. Once your daughter has been identified as a special education student she will have a legal plan in place which will articulate the specific modifications and accommodations she requires.

Experience from both sides, I recommend you address this issue to the principal, and if that does not resolve it. You may need to contact the Special Needs department at your county Board of Education. All else fails contact the State Secretary, this is their area of expertise. Hopes this helps.

I can absolutely relate to your situation,, however u did say when your child was diagnosed with ADD,, my daughter was diagnosed in 3rd grade and is now in 6th also,, but luckily a friend of mine who is a teacher in another state told me to request a 504 plan be put in place,, if you have never heard of a 504 it is deemed by the state that if your child has been tested and has ADD you can request that her school put in place a 504, the 504 gives you the ability as her parent to request things such as having her placed in the front of the classroom rather than being seated in the back -in my daughters situation being seated in the back created distractions from watching other children,, or if your child has difficulty taking tests with her class you can request that she be moved to a quite area and in your case where her teacher has the attitude that she will get it,, i have dealt with the same attitude esp in 6th grade,, let me also say that when i put the 504 into place she was in grade school and they were much more accomodating she started 6th grade this year and even though the 504 carried over to middle school i had to request a meeting with all her teachers to go over my requests and i met with the same attitude that she is to be responsible in handing in homework on time etc,,, but they also by state law cannot deny my requests,, there is a wealth of info on the 504 plan however i had to do my own research on how to get it started,, like i said no one at her grade school even mentioned anything about a 504,, i think it would be worth looking into,, and my feeling is if you can have it put in place the heck with any resistance you may meet you already are getting an attitude from her teacher,, at least with this plan they cannot deny your requests,,, however you willl have to be the one to request that it be put into place i would look it up online and then meet with the school principal and then after you fill out the paperwork request a meeting with all her teachers,,, since it is already the end of this school year you can go online and there are sites that will let you print out the 504 request form that you need to take to her school don't let them put you off demand that it be addressed before the start of her next school year

Good Luck
