dyslexia and public school sucess?

marylandmom
Hi. My son who is age 6 and in kindergarten has just been diagnosised with dyslexia. He is in the moderate to severe range with difficulies with auditory processing, reading, math, and working memory. His IQ test puts him in the upper end of above average. After much soul searching we have decided to put him in a special school where he will recieve intensive remediation for his dyslexia. Eventually we would like to "mainstream" him back to public school. So here is my request....does anyone have a child with dyslexia that was very sucessful in the public school system.

Our elementary school was going to offer my son speech and language services 2x a week and a "pull-out" reading class using fundations 5x a week. Since none of the services were being offered 1:1 or with other children with dyslexia and the fact that the school does not even recognize the word "dyslexia" we have decided on the private school.

Please advise and thank you.

It is important to give the public system an opportunity to address your son's specific learning needs. If they are unable to provide a free and appropriate education they are required to pay for that education in the appropriate setting - yes, that includes private school. You have to decide how you wish to proceed- and ultimately, what is in the best interest of your child. Many dyslexic students in Maryland have been successful, and thrived, in the public setting. However, once you pull your child out of the public setting - they are no longer covered by
all the protections provided by IDEA. ( unless you elect to re-enroll them). I would suggest that you closely monitor the situation. There are many wonderful private schools in the area which are equipped to address your child's needs. I encourage to explore all of the possibilities.
Best of luck to you!

PS - some really awesome private schools equipped to teach children who are dyslexic: Gemicy, Odessey, Baltimore Lab, Lab School of Washington!!

Marylandmom, my "gut feeling" says that if they used a non-verbal IQ test instead of the WISC-IV (such as the UNIT or C-TONI) your son would have scored higher, even now. It's unlikely that would change the type of remediation your son needs, anyway, but I did want to let you know about it.
Idel, I also invite you to join the groups I mentioned in my earlier post...there are more parents who have kids with issues like CAPD and LDs than you realize!

Unfortunately, I have the same situation as yours. My son has ADP(AUDITORY PROCESSING DYSFUNCTION)-DYSLEXIA AN AD AD. This is his 3rd year in a public school, he has retain in kindergarten and still the public school has not provided him completely with the services he needs. They just complain and complain, I have to pay private tutoring for my son. He still struggle in reading and writing..but little by little he will succeed.. Just give your son as much as support and love and seek private tutoring or a very well recognize private schools that might have good services for dyslexia.. I know that Dade Christian Private school in Miami lakes does have a great curriculum. unfortunately I can not afford to enroll my boy there...but they are good!..good luck..
