I understand why you want your son close to your work. When I used to work full time, my commute to get to my sons school was an hour w/o traffic and could be up to 3 if there was an accident. Also, having your child's school close allows you to come and get him if he is injured, sick, or if there is a program at school that you want to attend.
Just talk to the school district and you will have to apply. Remember, if someone tells you no, that doesnt always mean that is the final answer.
It probably depends on the public school system where you work. I've heard of some communities that do allow it, based on "hardship" situations, but the only way to know for sure is to ask them directly. Truthfully, while it might save you child care costs, do you really want your son sitting in a car 4 hours every day for your back/forth commute?
