Irvine Schools Too Intense??

Anonymous
I am relocating from the midwest to CA. I have heard consistently from real estate brokers and future colleagues that Irvine schools are great - if you are looking for insanely intense academic rigor. I hear comments like "students come home from school and study another 5-6 hours." I am hoping to find a school with great teachers and solid academics, but also a place where my kids can enjoy extra-curricular activities and (heaven forbid) a little down time. All comments welcome. Thanks!

That is absolutely not true. My son just finished elementary school in Irvine this year. The school was great. He had quite a bit of homework but nothing more than an hour a night. Irvine schools have great teachers and a great curriculum. I think the teachers go above and beyond in their teaching. I would hate to have the opposite problem. My son loved every year of elementary school.

I grew up in Irvine from 1st grade through high school. I went to Alderwood Elementary (no longer exists), Lakeside Middle School, Woodbridge and Irvine High. I did get good grades and I had time for fun and extracurricular activities. I don't believe the schools have changed much since my daughter was also lucky enough to attend Alderwood for a brief period of time. I personally feel like a lot of other schools are teaching the kids less than they should. I would enroll my kids in an Irvine school in a heartbeat. I have since lived in Alaska, as well as many other southern California cities.

Hi. I can't speak into Irvine schools because I don't live there, but you might find this interesting: community.greatschools.net/advice/184/Helpful-websites-when-seeking-info-about-HOW-SCHOOLS-COMPARE-STATE-TO-STATE-
(Note, Greatschools renamed "Research and Compare" to "Find a School" on the green menu bar near the top of this page.)
