Can I bring my child to my school district even if I don't live there?

Anonymous
I am thinking of getting a job in another district, but I live where I work now. If I change districts (to a better one), can I bring my son there? Does anyone know how this works? Thank you in advance!!!! :)

Thank you so much. I am actually working in the district where I live, but not very happy with the school system at this point. I should be able to speak with someone about releasing my son from our district, since I have worked here for a while. I guess I will have to see what happens! Thank you for your good wishes!!

Hi Shanesmommy,

Even if your son hasn't started kindergarten in the current district, you're likely going to need a release from the current district when he does go to kindergarten. But if you're working in a different district, it should be easier to get.

Good luck with the job search!

Thank you so much for your response! My son hasn't started Kindergarten yet, and will not do so until the 2010-2011 school year, so I won't have to worry about him being released. I am hoping to take him to the other district- I know too much about where I am now!! Thanks again!!

Hi Anon,

Every district has its own regulations on this. Typically both the district where you live and the district where you are going to take the child have to both agree to it.

When you apply for the new job, this would be a great question to ask during the interview process. Then you'd have to ask if your current district will release your child. Some will, some refuse.

Good luck, and let us know how the interview goes!
