There is a big thick line between bright and gifted however many parents make the mistake of thinking their child is gifted when indeed they are bright. I read an article a while ago that gave some tips on making the distinction. Is your child bored in class? Does your child work really hard to get good test grades or do they not study at all and still achieve high grades? The article also stated that "genius" children tend to debate their teachers and can be seen as having behavioral issues when in fact they are just challenging their teachers knowledge subconsciously.

My husband had many issues in school when he was growing up until his mother took him to a doctor and was given a IQ test in which he scored 132 at the age of 15. He still had to take summer school for English and barely graduated High School even though he passed all his exams with above 90 averages. He also had issues with his fine motor skills, it would take him hours to write out a paper (At the time computers were not very common). Some teachers would get upset when he would correct their mistakes and so they classified him as having attitude problems. He would also space out in class or sleep. My 5 year old daughter was experiencing the same difficulties as my husband when she started school, to the point her teachers said they may have to put her in a special class. They finally tested her and she scored higher than any other Pre-K student by a huge margin. This is where discussion of skipping grades began for me. I personally don't want to skip her until she has taken more tests and I can see taking that step will truly benefit her.

Healthy11 is 100% right a IQ of 150 is incredibly high and is above the "requirement" of being classified as a genius, 110-115 is quite average. Make sure you don't put your daughter in a situation where she is frustrated because she can't keep up with the other children. Other than that you're lucky to have a child that is performing so well, good luck.

jerseyswifie, do you have a "breakdown" of the WISC IQ subtest scores? The reason I ask is because there are certain "areas" where students with ADHD typically show lower performance...often Digit Span is one of them...Did they give your daughter the C-TONI before or after the WISC? Was her IQ score about the same?

While your daughter is definitely above average, I want to caution you that IQ testing on younger students is often considered less reliable and more variable than that of older students. One of the reasons is because some of the tests aren't timed for children under age 8, but after that, processing speed counts. While it doesn't seem like a big deal, a child who is slow completing tasks is apt to have difficulty in school, as the work load increases. How is your daughter's spelling/writing? In many schools, children are not chosen for gifted programming unless their IQ's are 130 or above. My son's is near 150, and he's now a teen, in college. As bright as he is, school still is challenging for him, because his organization and time management skills are weak.

If your daughter has both ADHD and is bright, I would be very hesitant to have her skip a grade. Even if your daughter can do the academic work now, there is a maturity factor that needs to be considered. Many children with ADHD tend to "be in their own world" and don't read social cues well...they don't realize that their behaviors (ie, blurting out answers in class, chatting/fidgeting, etc.) are considered rude and distracting to kids around them, and as they get older, classmates tend to avoid them. I realize every child is different, and every school is different, so you'll have to do more investigation. Can you visit the gifted class at your daughter's school, to see what it involves, before you decide to place her in it?

Good Morning Healthy 11:) I greatly apperciate you info on my question! That information did help me out and yes i agree with you that not all schools offer the gifted programs; but the school my daughter is attending as of right now does. Her teacher told me that she can enter it untill the school is over and she said that next yr she might be able to skip to 2nd grade. My daughter was diagnosed with ADHD but weather she has it or not is questioned to be me; but I agree with you that some children can have ADHD and be highly intellegent:) that was a very good point! Unitll my husband and I got this diagonsis we were scpetal about her having ADHD and bening as smart as she is; but on the flip side we are thrilled that she can excell at her studies with her IQ level(115) and the only thing we need to do is help her ADHD symptoms so she can learn to focus better:) How do you help your son with his ADHD and how does it affect his IQ at school?
Thankx again for you hlepful info and have a blessed day:)

Hello Vacekd1001; Good morning and ty for your fast response on my comment! I appoligise for being so vague about my daughter:) we live in Portsmouth, VA
My daughter scored a 115 on her IQ test; and her physciatrist told me she was highly intellegent for a 6 yr old. Yes she does have an above average IQ:)
Her teacher and teachers that had tested her as well told me; they sugested that she be in a IEP plan they he said with her bening ADHD that will also help! the tests that her doctor gave her was the CTONI (Comprehensive Test of Nonverbal Intelligence) also;WISC-IV (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children.

I hope this information helps clear things up. this is all new to me and we just got this diagnosis about her IQ and her ADHD. Her teacher said she can be in a IEP "gifted" class for the rest of the school yr. and next year I am pretty sure she will be able to skip to 2nd grade! Do you have a gifted child? if so how did you go about all of this and how has it affected things for you and your child/ family? Look foward to hearing you from you as well:) Have a blessed day!

HI. I see that you are in VA. (vacekd1001, if you look just above the "eyeglasses" Watch icon at the top of the posting, you can see if a person's post has been categorized locally...it says "You Are Here: Community Home: Portsmouth, VA...")

Anyway, vacekd1001 did ask some pertinent questions. Who did the IQ testing that you speak of (school personnel or a private evaluator?) and what exactly were the tests given? My son is a highly gifted student, and he also has ADHD along with dyslexia. I am very aware that bright but bored kids can look like they've got ADHD, even when they don't, BUT I ALSO KNOW some students can be gifted as well as have ADHD/LDs. The term for those kids is "2e" or "twice exceptional," being at both ends of the learning spectrum.....If you'd like to learn more, I've compiled many resources at community.greatschools.net/groups/16042

Truthfully, most public schools don't start gifted programming until 3rd grade, and many of those schools routinely screen all 2nd graders and look at teacher recommendations and grades to help make the final determination. Unfortunately, there is no federal mandate saying that gifted education is a requirement, and some school districts don't offer any. You'll need to check your state guidelines and local district to see what they provide, and what the eligibility criteria are...

Hi and Welcome to Great Schools!!!

In order to better help you we need to know some more information.
What state do you live in?
Does your daughter have a 504 plan or an IEP.

I noticed from your profile your daughter may have ADHD is that correct?

I am confused about the IQ score. IQ scores are usually given in numbers like 70, 85, 100, 140. Do you mean your daughter has an above average IQ or she is working 2yrs above grade level? What Tests and or Evaluations has your daughter been given?

We look forward to hearing more from you :)
