how can you grade a child on work that you don't send home to study?

sharon44
Ms.Niese wants to hold my grandaughter back i asked why every homework she gets good grades. she knows how to read she knows her math and spelling this is what we study seven days a week. Ms.Niese says she don't grade them on homework she says someone else can do it for them. i said test her give her the same homework at school. then she start showing me that what she is graded on never has she sent home none of these papers to study or do at home so you tell me how do she is to get better in what she has to do at school if the parents don't know what to help them study for.

First graders aren't developmentally ready to "study" the way upper grade students can. Homework is a way for young children to practice the skills they have worked on in class, and for parents to get a feel for what their children are learning and how they're doing. Many teachers don't grade homework for young children, because parents tend to be very involved with younger kids' homework.

If the material your granddaughter is being tested on in class is similar to what she's practicing at home (in other words, if she has addition problems for homework and her math test is on addition) then she has "studied" in a way that's appropriate for a first grader.

Before you start making public accusations about this teacher, you need to take a deep breath and get more information. It sounds as if you and the teacher are seeing totally different things from your granddaughter. You see her performing well at home, and her teacher sees her performing poorly at school. Either you and the teacher have a very different understanding of what a first grader should be able to do, or your granddaughter is having a problem performing in school. A responsible teacher won't recommend promoting her to second grade if she isn't demonstrating IN CLASS that she can perform at first-grade level, so it's time to find out exactly where the teacher believes she is falling short.

When it comes to grades and grading practices, teachers can sadly do almost anything they want no matter how poor a practice it is. Your post isn' t clear though on why the teacher wants to hold your granddaughter back? Because of her grades? This teacher is telling you that homework in her class is done for practice, not for a grade. But not every grade in the class should come from tests alone. Does your granddaughter have writing assignments she does in the class? If your granddaughter is good in math outside the class, she should do fairly well on her math tests in the class even without studying.

In any case, I don't think the teacher or this school can hold your granddaughter back unless her parents or her guardian agrees to it.

Please forgive me, but I'm confused ~ it sounds like your granddaughter is not getting good grades on her tests given in class, and that's why the teacher wants her to repeat first grade? What subjects is she struggling with in school? My son has had teachers not to count homework for grades; it depends on the individual teacher. I think your efforts would be better spent by trying to figure out why your daughter can do the work at home, but does poorly on tests. Does she perhaps get distracted when in a classroom full of lots of children, where she works 1-on-1 with you? Or is she a slow worker, and you give her unlimited time to accomplish her work, but the tests are timed? It is important to figure out why your granddaughter is struggling.

my grandaughter is six, she is in the first grade.she brings home math to do which she gets one hundred on,she bring home spelling words and she knows them she passes with no problem. we study seven days a week and we study what is sent home, she do not grade work that is sent home which should be graded. the work that is done in class should be brought home to if that is what they grade the students on. how do we study for something if it is not brought home. just don't make since to me or no other parent. everything that you are graded on is to be brought home to study how else is they going to understand anything. Mrs.Niese is trying to keep them behind but i will not let it happen to my grandaughter, i know she is very smart always been, last year she was helping the other students with their work in school. she is a lazy teacher and something has to be done right know.i will email send out flyers and go to every private school and let it be known how this teacher is.first i will start with they church. very concerned parent.

How old is your granddaughter? If you ask her what subjects they're working on in class each day, what does she tell you? When you say that she's good at math and spelling, but does poorly on tests in school, what kinds of tests did the teacher show you that she is having trouble with? If the teacher is doing the same thing, and giving the same tests to all the children without sending materials home, then it's more difficult to argue about fairness. Instead, I would really try to focus on why your granddaughter seems to be having trouble, if none of the other children are.
