How do you choose the BEST elementary school in Valdosta with a special need (autistic) child?

momsosweet
We are an Air Force family and transferring from MD in July to Valdosta. We have a 5 YO autistic child with some verbal. He needs speech and occupational therapy in school and outside the home. We also need an ABA/applied behavior analysist in this area. Can you please help us with the resources in GA? It seems Jacksonvile, FL is the closest autism center, 2 1/2 hours away which this just makes me cry :(

Air Force can not support our autistic child so we are being reassign. Thank you for your offer.

Hi, we are also Air Force. Christian, our 5 year old has a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. For the last two years, he attended the Special Education Pre-K at Sallas-Mahone Elementary. While I haven't heard much from others on this topic, he will be attending WG Nunn Elementary in the Fall. I've met with his teachers, and they seem nice. There is a local support group called SOSKids, while I haven't become very involved with them yet, they are a nice group of people. I can get you their contact info if you like.

HI. Unfortunately, Greatschools is a nationwide forum and there aren't a lot of families from any particular town, much less ones who have children of similar age and with a similar diagnosis.

I've got a son with some special needs, but I don't live in GA. My suggestion would have been to find an autism support group in the area you're moving to, but it sounds like you may have already tried that. www.thearc.org is a nationwide organization that helps families with conditions like autism and Down's in my area, and they might be able to help put you in touch with other families in GA...it couldn't hurt to ask.
