Active-Parent
My son turned 5 after Sept 1 so he was denied entry into public school I had him tested and appealed to the School board in MD. I got nowhere & they denied him entry . So I had to put my 5 yr old in a headstart like atmosphere...Since he will be turhing 6 after Sept 1 will I have to send him to Kindergarten?

Since you've already appealed to the School Board, it would seem as if your District is not willing to make an exception for your son. Unfortunately, and this is particularly true with young boys, their fine-motor development and ability to sit and focus often lags behind other classmates. This can have a big impact on their writing performance and other things. Schools don't want to have a student enter early, and repeat a grade later.

Many parents have found that many private schools (ie, Montessori, or gifted) are not bound by the birthday cut-off deadlines, but instead look at a child's ability level. If you are able to place your child in Kindergarten and/or 1st grade in another school, then often the public schools do allow the student to transfer in to 1st or 2nd grade later.
