Looking for feedback on schools in the south, south Chicago suburbs.

We are relocating to the south Chicago area. My husband will be working in University Park and we want to find a school system that is not too big but offers gifted classes. We will have a 4th and 6th grader for fall 2009.

I grew up in Evergreen Park/Oak Lawn, and have a good friend who still lives in Orland Park, which is further south, but still not as far south as Frankfort...I hope someone from Greatschools will see your post and be able to reply, but this forum has only been operational for about a year. (That's another reason why there aren't a lot of posters from any one specific area yet.)
One of the things you might want to investigate later is enrichment programming for gifted students through National Lewis University....they offer weekend and summer programs at various Chicagoland sites, and some of the local community colleges do as well. www.centerforgifted.org/

Thanks for your reply. I have used the "Find a School" and have gotten lots of good info. I was hoping there might be someone who currently lives in that area that would be willing to share their likes/dislikes of their schools. Where did you grow up? Do you still have family in the area?

Hi. I grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, and your post "caught my eye." Unfortunately, the chance of finding another family from a particular town, with children of similar age and abilities, is slim. Have you tried using the "Find a School" feature on the green menu bar near the top of this page? You can enter a location and grade level and see what schools are in a given area. Public school are rated based on how their students perform on statewide testing (in IL, it's the ISAT's) where 1 is low and 10 is highest. You can probably call the local district and find out about their gifted offerings once you narrow your search among the choices available.
