I recently looked at school ranking and i don't understand how does it work. my daughter's middle school ranking in our county is number 60 and then other middle schools in our disstrict that we know are not well have much better ranking.

School 'ranking' is an inexact science to say the least. The only measure used at present to 'rank' schools are their results on state standardized tests. There may be schools whose students overall do very well on such tests but are yet schools that you wouldn't want your children to attend. Good scores on state standardized tests in no way correlates with parent satisfaction - parents are as interested in the condition of the school, the tone and temper of the teachers, the diversity of programs offered, safety issues, as well as a host of other factors.
If you're happy with your daughter's school, don't let any 'school ranking' make you less happy with it.

I think you may be confusing where your child's school is alphabetically in the overall list of schools, with rating and ranking scores.
On Greatschools, the public school ratings range from 1 (low) to 10 (highest) and they reflect how their students perform on statewide testing compared to other students at the same grade levels across the state. There is no ranking past 10.
