My child didn't get into any of the schools we applied to - now what?

I have current 2nd grader and K student who have been tested and fit the description of a very accelerated learner. We didn't get into any of the Chicago Public Schools that we applied to. My neighborhood school is a shambles the test scores are some of the worst in the city. What am I supposed to do? This is ridiculous. Please help.

Don't give up keep making frequent phone calls. Try visiting the schools and talking to the principles they love to see the parents being involved in their children's education. Keep yourself in the waiting list. I had my daughter in 3 waiting list and she was accepted to one of the schools. Once the school year started she was also accepted into the other two schools. You still have a good chance in getting in :)

This is your child's future! Call the principal at Disney, or call the CPS options program office. Don't sit back. You can do something about this.

I've called a main number for CPS last year I basically what they told me is to apply for these gifted programs. They tod me where to find the list.

How do you like the Disney Magnet school. I have a twenty year old son that I tried to get in there for first grade. So you can see how long I've been dealing with this. I've heard a number of different things about disney. Is it possible you have the number that I can call and maybe a specific person to speak to?

My granddaughter scored upper 800s out of 1000 and did not get into Whitney Young. Thanks for the suggestions.

I understand what your going through.I've have the same problem. My child who is 6 years old was tested for the gifted schools in chicago. I thought there was no way this child would not be choosen. Remember it is chicago alot of it is still political. She's extremely bright and was not selected. Then I found the perfect montessori school for my child and its cost is 12,000 per/yr. I definately can not afford it. I watched my 7th grader fall through the cracks in the system she has never been challenged and was bored for years. She's doing better now and understands the importance of her grades this year to get into H.S. I can not stand to sit back and watch another child go through the same thing. Even her teachers agree she needs to be challenged more. I spoke to the principle who promised to pull her out and put her in first grade reading since she was reading in pre-school but that didn't last long. He decided there was no way he could continue this their wasn't enough funding and needed the teacher she was with for the slow learner group. Basically there is nothing for smart children.
Let me know if you find something and I'll do the same.
Thanks

Did you get even close to getting into any of them? We were on a waiting list at a magnet last year and my husband called every Monday morning all summer long. Our son got in by the end of the summer. :-)

Also, I was told by an administrator at Disney Magnet that because they are so big they have some flexibility sometimes. Another parent in your situation called the CPS schools office and explained the situation, and CPS called Disney, they were accepted, and the kids now go there.

Good luck!
