Are there any activities for the children in Birmingham with a price that won't kill me?

MrsSharpe1
I am on a fixed income but I also don't want to deprived my children of activities and sports. I want them to expand themselves farther than the front or back yard, but everything is so expensive; even the YMCA is expensive! Somebody, anybody, HELP!!!

Every year we participate with all the local library programs, pick 2-3 summer VBS programs from the nearby churches, and plan a couple trips to either Atlanta or Chattanooga (somewhere w/i easy driving distance) for the weekend. This year, we will also be looking into how we can volunteer together. A membership to the Zoo or McWayne center is a good idea... but don't forget the free parks.
I don't know about any special programs for those of us who have children with disabilities, everything I've found is WAY out of our budget, but you might contact the support group for your child's specific disability. Sometimes the support groups have play events or group trips.
You can always host something if you can't find a group to join. I know the Alabama Cooperative Extension Service is always looking for new 4-H youths & group leaders.

I didn't know the YMCA did that! I 'll ask about that, thank you! My oldest daughter wants to get into Karate and we are just tight right. and telling your children no about something they are so excited about is hurting to me!

Our YMCA "subsidizes" participation in their camps and other programs for families that can't otherwise afford them...you might want to inquire about it. Also, churches sometimes have summer programs at little cost.

You might try your local parks and rec department. Ours has a variety of programs at very attractive prices.
