If you would like a school that has a small home-town feel you might want to consider Franklin West Elementary in downtown mesa. The dress codes and behavior expectations are high. The academics are accelerated meaning that after Christmas they are doing the next grade level work. As with every school there are some wonderful and not so wonderful teachers. I have two children that have attended this school. We have been involved with this school for almost 7 years. I'm so glad we found it! There are other Franklin schools around Mesa. It is an alternative public school. There are some other Franklin schools that are charter which I don't know much about. But I would highly reccommend this school especially if your focus is on accademics.

My children attended schools in the Deer Valley Unified School District and I was very pleased on many levels. I have a Kindergartener and a 5th grader and I found that all but one of the teachers was teaching for the love of teaching. My daughter attended for 3 years and just loved going to school. When my son started Kindergarten his reading and math skills really blossomed. There is also a great deal of parent involvement/volunteering;it's warmly welcomed at the two DVUSD schools our children attended and at the others my daughters friends attend. Since moving out of state we miss it terribly.

If you want an academically Excelling school, Fuller Elementary is in Tempe, but right by the border with Mesa at the 101 and Baseline. A good percentage of the kids who go there are also from Mesa, so you won't feel alone! It's a small school and you definitely feel like you're part of a community.

I HIGHLY recommend Pomeroy Elementary. It's in chandler, but in the mesa unified school district. i am a former student (i attended two years ago, so i know its still good) and it is an amazing school. all of the teachers are highly involved and focused on creating a good environment. The Principal, Mr. Pascal, is the most involved principle i have every met. if you can, get your child in this school!

I really recommend Self Development Charter School (McKellips & Greenfield). It is a VERY good school.
