NO, it is NOT too late to begin the assessment process if there is a likelyhood of a child having a learning disability...if you formally request that the school do a comprehensive educational evaluation, in writing, then the school must either comply, or provide an explanation of why they don't feel it's necessary. From what you've said, there has been verbal conversation between you and the school, but nothing formally documented. Please, do join the Learning and Attention Group I mentioned earlier, and you'll find many other parents who can advise and guide you through the process.
he's in 1st grade and has been failing math since the 2nd 6wks. they were supposed to do a 504 assessment, back in december, now they're telling me it's too late to do one.
How old is your son/what grade? Has he ever had a comprehensive educational evaluation for possible learning disabilities? That will show his strengths/weaknesses, and if he's got a significant delay, it should qualify him for an IEP (Individual Education Plan) and appropriate remediation.
I invite you to join the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 in order to learn more about the evaluation process and your rights.
