I have a friend from New Jersey who recently moved to NC - about 45 minutes from W-Salem. Knowing NJ is unofficially considered the "epicenter" of the autism epidemic, she did not hold out high hopes for services in North Carolina; however, even she has been unpleasantly surprised. Keep in mind that thanks to "No Child Left Behind", a parent has the right to request an IEP and services for their child; however, schools have the right to evaluate that child and find that mysteriously, they no longer need services. Or else, the services they provide are woefully inadequate but within the letter of the law. I would only say you should be prepared to pay for private counselling/therapy for your child in ADDITION to whatever help the school can give you. Although NC schools are improving, they still labor under the misunderstanding of most of the adults who run them.
Unfortunately, Greatschools is a nationwide forum, but the chance of finding another family from the same town, with a child having similar needs is slim. It's virtually impossible to know how schools will be 5 years from now when you move. You might see if the nationwide group www.thearc.org has a chapter in NC and ask them. For general questions, you might also like to join the Autism Parents Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/18940
