Huntsville City schools are definitely among the best in Alabama (I realize that might sound like bragging that you have the stateroom on the Titanic.) Alabama does not have a good reputation with much of the rest of the country. Some of that may be deserved, but it has made great strides in the past few years. I think Huntsville achieves a balance. We are of a size where we are involved in our schools and we are not too big as to have the seriously troubled schools as in larger cities. (I moved here from Atlanta - I know of what I speak.)
Our school system is rigorous enough for students who need the challenge, offers alternatives for students who are not college bound, and has a great arts magnet program offered on the basis of talent and interest.
And I tink our superintendent and school board are doing a decent job, previous comments not withstanding.
Yes, Hampton Cove Elementary and Hampton Cove Middle are both Huntsville City Schools are are two of the best schools in the region. The are in the city of Huntsville but in the zip code of Owens Crossroads (very confusing). They feed to Huntsville High (Great Schools 9/10). Grissom is also an outstanding school in the HSC district. Bob Jones is excellent but it is in Madison City Schools.
Now, are they the best in the country? I think Grissom made the Newsweek best 1000 high schools list a year or two ago in the 500 range.
The Huntsville area has excellent public schools. As with any metropolitan area there are strong schools and week schools and everything in between. If you do your home work you can easily find which areas have the strongest schools. We have 3 different school systems in the Huntsville area, Huntsville City Schools, Madsion City Schools and Madison County Schools. There are great schools in each of the 3 systems. I think if you compare test scores you'll see that the schools in East Huntsville and Southeast Huntsville outscore everyone. The only problem that I see with greatschools.net is that they have placed 2 of the best schools in Huntsville in Owens Cross Roads, AL. Hampton Cove Elementary and Hampton Cove Middle School are both within the City Limits of Huntsville and are part of the Huntsville City School System.
NO! You are (unfortunately) sorely misinformed! We have the capability, but it will take YEARS to undo what the current superintendent has done to our school system once she's finally out of office. Do not move here for the school system!
