To answer your question - Is your child currently on an IEP (found eligible for special ed services and has an individualized ed program)?
If so, your child has a right to access any and all classes to make progress in the general curriculum. In fact, IDEA (special ed law) mandates that children be educated in the least restrictive environment - as close to the mainstream as possible. To the extent that they need special help such as a personal aide, or accommodations such as more time or preferential seating, this should be outlined in their IEP.
Likewise, if a child needs specialized instruction such as a reading program, speech and language therapy or even a modified gym program, they should get these services.
The way the law is written is that the child is entitled to whatever services they need - regardless as to wether or not the school has them. If the school does not have them, they must find the resources to provide them to be compiant with the IEP.
This is often easier said than done, but it is the way special ed law is written. You will find more info at the learning group. community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
Hi. Greatschools is a nationwide forum, and we have no idea what school you were trying to contact, to inquire about their programming. I recommend that you phone them and ask, because there are so many different special needs...A child who is blind would have different class requirements than a child who has autism, for example.
For general questions, I invite you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
