Thank you for informing me of 2e. I have never heard of this term. Makes sense though. It amazes me of how many children are effected by this issue.

Sophie, there's a term for very bright children with ADHD and/or LD's, and it's "2e" or "twice exceptional." I have compiled a bunch of resources in the "2e" group at community.greatschools.net/groups/16042, and I invite you to join us!

You are so correct about schools not wanting to use the term Dyslexia. They say it is broad of term. It is crazy! I can't stand the term Learning Disability. My son is very bright and was proven when he was given a WISC test (IQ). These kids do not fit the 60% major public schools teach to. Unfortunately they in the 40% minority, thus being labled LD. I was told that my son could be accommadated in reading thru the LD Class. Which is at a much slower learning pace, but no change in teaching style. I went Marburn Academy and found out how my son needed to be taught. He needed a stricted phonics base program like OG. He now attends Marburn Academy and he is very successful. He has even made the Honor Roll and Dean's List many many times. My son has never been accommodated in a class, he has been taught the way he learns, that is it!

I have a 10 year old son with ADD and Dyslexia. Usually ADD or ADHD is underlying in a child with Dyslexia. Your child I am sure is very bright, but just not being taught the way she learns. If you haven't already, try OG phonics program. You can purchase Lexia learing programs online --- my sons school uses them. Not sure where you live, but there are private schools for such learning differences. We live in Columbus, Ohio and we send our son to Marburn Academy. Look it up online --- lots of info on Dyslexia. My son could not read till he started 2nd grade. He was only at Marburn for 6 weeks and was reading. At the end of 3rd grade he was at a 4th grade reading level. This past summer he had a tutor and in six weeks gained a 1/2 year in reading. He wrote a 2 page book report on Munty on the Bounty.
Your child is bright, probably brighter than a lot of her peers . These kids are amazing if taught the way they learn! Good luck.

Welcome. My daughter too has dyslexia. I look forward to seeing your posts in the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group. Here is some additional information on the types of multi-sensory programs healthy mentioned:

Hi. My son also has dyslexia, and he is now in college. I don't know where you live, but many schools won't use the term "dyslexia" when talking to parents. It's actually helpful that your daughter's school has recognized the problem, so you can begin to learn more about it, and hopefully the school will also provide remediation programs that will help your daughter to improve her reading and writing. Students with dyslexia CAN learn to read, but they often benefit from multisensory programs that aren't used in regular classrooms.
In order to meet more parents of children with dyslexia, I'd like to invite you to join the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554
