I have lived in Homewood since 1971 and have put 3 children of my own through the schools here. 2 of which had IEP's. We have an amazing Special Ed system and I am sure we have something here for your child. If you have not found anything you could contact me or the schools. I can be reached at ron@ronwexler.com
I don't know how far you're moving from, or exactly when, but I'm wondering if your son will be eligible for ESY in your current school district for this summer? When you move to the new district, his IEP should remain in place until they can do their own evaluation (if they chose to do so) but it probably wouldn't hurt to call the Homewood district ahead of your move, to ask about ESY. Truthfully, I don't know of any private programs for 5-yr-olds that combine academics and social Iearning opportunities.
Not to discourage you, but the social skills class that my son attended (he was probably age 8 or 9 at the time) helped him learn to interact better with peers during the formal sessions, but there was always an adult present to "encourage" kids...Translating what he was taught to an "unstructured" setting, like approaching other kids on the playground when no teachers were around, did not really occur. I've talked to other parents who felt the same, that group social skills classes for their children don't hurt, but the benefits aren't as great as they'd hoped. Perhaps your son's situation would be different. Is part of his shyness due to receptive or expressive language problems he might have? A speech therapist should be able to help him with the social skills, too.
Homewood is a south suburb. My son has an IEP-diagnosis went from Developmental delay to learning disability. He also has social issues. Yes he has attended an ESY program. He is going into kindergarten in september and he will be 6 in october.
This is his last year at the school he attends. I am looking for a program that addresses learning and social needs. I want a combination of academics and play ativities. If I can't find that I can have both at different times and days. Sounds like your child psychologist was helpful. I hope I gave enough information in hopes for some help. Thank you
Hi. I'm in IL, although not from Homewood. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's far south suburban Chicago, right? I know of a few Chicago area programs for kids with different needs, but more information about your son would be helpful. How old is he/what grade, and what is his diagnosis? Does he currently have an IEP? Has he ever attended ESY programs? (Extended School Year) Are you looking for a program that will address his learning and social needs, or just a program that will be accepting of children with different issues?
My own son has ADHD/dyslexia/dysgraphia, and I was able to find a regular summer day camp through the local park district that had low child:counselor ratio, with good adult supervision. I wasn't seeking summer academics. Privately, I took him to a child psychologist who ran a social skills group for kids, and to a tutor to assist him with reading and writing work.
